Swahili hood: A Platform for Enter-Educate Feature Films. A study about the Tanzanian Film Industry led by Media for Development International.
This study examines the Tanzania film industry. Data collection interviews and focus group. Findings reveal that there are few statistics and little reliable information available about the film industry in Tanzania. There are reportedly over 50 independent producers making films and over 25 distributers with strong wholesale networks in Tanzania and East Africa. Producers sell all the rights to their films to distributers, mainly located in Dar es Salaam, reportedly for as little as 1.5 million Tshs and as much as 20 million Tshs depending on production values and star value. Furthermore, there are nearly ten thousand video exhibition halls and about twenty five thousand video rental libraries across the country. This cultural industry in Tanzania, is commercially sustainable and if nurtured will grow and improve over time.
